”Dark Matter”

Maren Juell Kristensen

July 28 - August 31, 2007

Opening July 28, 19.00

“Astronomers have long suspected the existence of the invisible substance of
dark matter as the source of additional gravity that holds together galaxy clusters.
Otherwise, astronomers say, the clusters would fly apart if they relied only on the
gravity from their visible stars. Although astronomers don't know what dark matter
is made of, they hypothesize that it is a type of elementary particle that pervades
the Universe.”

Maren Juell Kristensen is an artist working primarily with video and installation,
often together. The installations are arranged as a fragmented narrative where
emphasis is placed on what is outside of the viewfinder. The work refers to mass
media and popular culture. Certain film genres and folklore myths are recurrent in
the work. She is concerned with the perception of reality and doubt regarding
expectations, especially on the topic of value, both in connection with art as a
commodity and in a sense of personal significance in relation to others, in this
instance personified by the fan, the movie star and the stalker.

The installation consists of three videos, a circle (or a void) made with powder
of black pigment and a photograph of a camera’s aperture. The three videos all
deal with voyeurism, status and fame in a hand-held, low-fi quality. ‘Such a
Laugh’ and ‘Walk the Walk’ are filmed at an angle, and have a spoken narrative,
that places the viewer in the protagonist’s point of view.
